Now let me share my opinion about the meaning of this "R & R" song. I was not sure or downright confused of what JD was singing about many years ago so I've searched for HIS meaning and found some of those that I think JD was singing about.
There are more than few meanings of "R & R" that people still confuse about. But I think JD meant to sing his "R & R" like he said it sometime ago;
"There are sadness and fear prevailing among humanity today, a sense of loss, uncertainty, a questioning on true meaning of life and if this struggle for life is really worth the try. These are times to look for or renew friendship and support and search for true values. People are looking for answers especially when confronting tragedy or loss of jobs and economic collapse. But they continue to look for these answers in the wrong place, in an old paradigm of worn out religious values and culture that do not seem to satisfy anymore the yearnings of the new streams of life.....John Denver"
I hope it will shed some light to whoever loves this song or you can simply shrug your shoulders and move on
